Tandem Sky Dive

Date: 15/08/2010

Location: Swansea

The Sparkle Appeal in conjunction wth Skydive Swansea is looking for intrepid volunteers to jump out of a plane at 12,000 feet just like Bryer Hill did in 2009!!!

Ever Fancied a tandem Sky Dive????

Would you like the feel of the wind in your face?

The weightlessness of gravity?

Ever wanted to jump out of a plane at over 12,000ft?

WELL NOW YOU CAN!

The Sparkle Appeal in conjunction with Skydive Swansea is offering you the opportunity to have an experience of a lifetime whilst raising money for a good cause.

To take part you must raise a minimum of £350.00 in sponsorship.  This will enable you to make a tandem skydive at no cost to you other than the time you put in to obtaining the pledges and collecting the required charitable donations.

As you can imagine we would love you to raise much more than the £350.00 and many people who take part in such events raise considerably in excess of the minimum required.

The £350.00 consists of £200 payable to Skydive Swansea (£30 as a non returnable deposit and £170 on the day).  With £150 minimum sponsorship which should be paid to the charity 5 days prior to your jump.

Skydive Swansea is the only drop zone in Wales, offering members of the public the opportunity to make a tandem parachute jump from 12,000 ft for charity.

So the question is..... Can you do it?

 Bryher Hill’s Story!!!

Bryher Hill (pictured above) jumped with Skydive Swansea to raise money for Sparkle in 2009 and raised a fantastic £523.00.

This is Bryher's story from the day:

"We had a LOT of waiting around but finally the weather cleared up a little and things started moving. I was quite lucky as I got put onto the 3rd group to go up even though that was one of the "morning" arrival groups rather than the "afternoon" groups I should have been in it was great as they had all been there since 8.30am and we only got there at 11.30!

I was kitted up in a grey jump suit (looked like a boiler suit), Biggles style hat, gloves, goggles, neck warmer and harness. I was then carted out to the aeroplane with my tandem instructor Ryan.

Once in the plane I had to sit on Ryan’s lap and we had a chat whilst he joined my harness on to his. He told me that this was going to be his 4,440th (ish) jump. That made me feel more confident! We got to 13,000 feet and it was time for the first guy to go. He went and we swiftly followed. Being shuffled to the door on the tiny plane was really weird and be dropped out of it whilst Ryan was still holding on was weirder. I had to banana my body so that my hips were forward, my head was back and my knees were bent and legs crossed behind us.

On "3" Ryan had us out of the plane and we were swooping away from the plane to the left. We went from 13,000 feet down to 6,000 feet in about 50 seconds. It was an incredible feeling, hard to breathe and very noisy! Ryan must have done something with his legs or whatever as we did some quite cool spinning around and some headfirst stuff (I think).

At the 6,000 feet mark Ryan deployed the parachute and we slowed right down. At about 5,000 feet I started blabbering about how cool it was that I was doing this and my reasons why (seeing that in January 2008 I was 6 stone over the female weight limit). Ryan let me get used to going down slowly and then let me hold onto the controls (there were second loops underneath his so he was always holding on). He helped me to control the parachute so that we could spiral REALLY FAST down through the thick cloud that was really odd as I didn’t have a clue where we were going and it just felt really speedy. Soon ground appeared and we slowly descended. Ryan took over the controls for the landing. We came in quite quick for the landing and I had to hold my legs up as I was hanging lower than Ryan due to the way tandem harnesses are made. We landed with me on my bottom (please note my bad foot had no involvement whatsoever in the skydive) and then came to a stop with a few of the ground crew grabbing the parachute, etc. to stop it turning into a giant kite.

I was unleashed from my harness and able to walk back to the terminal feeling VERY elated! It was quite funny as apparently I must have had a lot of adrenalin as people kept on commenting on how big my pupils were!

I had a fantastic time and am finding it quite strange sitting here now to realise that I’ve actually done it! I’ve wanted to do it for so long and now I have, and I’ve raised a lot of money for charity at the same time!"
