O2e funds 'inspiring' residential trip for disabled young people of Gwent

In August, we were able to host our annual Sparkle residential trip thanks to funding from 'Ordinary 2 Extraordinary', a community of philanthropic volunteers who have supported Sparkle for years.

Every year, we aim to provide young people with a residential overnight stay, away from their parents or carers.

This year out of the 22 young people who attended, 10 of them had not before been on a trip away from home.

Our young people had opportunities to take part in a variety of fun accessible activities at Hilston Park. These activities included climbing, orienteering, ziplining, and archery. They enjoyed independence from parents/carers, whilst engaging with and sharing rooms with peers.

The trip was a huge success for everyone, including both new and returning young participants. The staff were thoroughly impressed by the determination and bravery shown. Many young individuals felt apprehensive about participating in the activities offered. But, with the support and motivation received from friends, they were able to overcome their fears and try something new!

The bravery of our youth inspired our staff... even Sparkle chair Janet Kelly participated in activities such as the 'leap of faith' alongside them.

The personal achievements and outcomes for each young person were completely exceeded, and we were proud to witness their independence and ability to take part in activities that they had not had the opportunity to take part in before.

Sparkle Leisure Team Lead Sara Filer says:

"Spending time with the young people has been an absolute pleasure. It was inspiring to witness their courage and determination as they took on new challenges and tried new activities. Their smiles and sense of pride after their accomplishments were truly amazing to see!

On behalf of myself and the team, thank you to the parents for putting their trust in us and allowing us to share this experience with our young people."

Every child should get the same opportunities to go on residential trips to aid their development, make friends, overcome fears, and develop independence. We thank O2e for funding this unforgettable trip.
