Impact Story: James and the Move to Sense

James and the Move to Sense, looking happy

From ‘Hit or Miss’ to ‘He Loves It’: How Sparkle’s Move to Sense in Caerphilly is Helping Children Thrive

When you’re a parent, you notice the small things, the way your child walks into a building, the look on their face when you pick them up, and the little signs that tell you whether a session was just okay or something they really loved.

For Liz and her son James, those small things have changed in a big way since Sparkle’s Caerphilly club moved to the Sense Hub.

Outgrowing the Space

James has been attending Sparkle clubs since he was five. Nearly five years of Play Club, friendships, familiar staff, and a place that understands his needs. But over time, the children’s centre space began to feel too small.

‘He had outgrown the space,’ Liz explains. ‘It was small and cramped and it was hit or miss if he had a good session or not.’

He still attended. He still enjoyed it. But it wasn’t always consistent. Some sessions were great. Others were harder.

For many families, the environment makes all the difference.

A Bigger Space, A Bigger Smile

Since moving to Sense in Caerphilly, something has shifted.

‘Since moving to Sense, James has had a big smile on his face every time I pull up outside the building, and a big smile when I collect him.’

It’s such a simple image. Pulling up outside. A smile before he’s even gone in. But those moments matter.

The additional space, facilities and layout at Sense have created more opportunities for children to explore, participate and feel comfortable.

Staff have noticed the difference too.

‘Since attending Sense, James has shown lots of positive engagement with both staff and other children and young people attending the club,’ says Liberty, one of Sparkle’s Activity Coordinator.

‘He enjoys participating in group activities such as parachute games and messy or sensory play. James is slowly growing his independence by initiating play with staff members, which is great to see. It’s a pleasure to have James attending and enjoying Play Club at Sparkle.’

They may not sound like huge milestones, but these small moments are often the steps that build confidence over time.

More Than a Session

For Liz, the impact goes beyond the session itself.

‘It is nice to see your child happy, knowing that they are enjoying themselves and getting something positive out of the session.’

Sparkle’s clubs are not just activities. They are spaces where children can be themselves, build confidence and develop independence in a setting that truly understands their needs.

‘The clubs are an invaluable resource for us as a family,’ Liz adds. ‘Due to his needs there is no other setting that would allow James to attend without a parent, and having that time away from us builds his confidence and independence, which is important for his development.’

For many families, that kind of time is rare, a space where their child is supported, included and safe to thrive. That matters more than we can always put into words.

Why Environment Matters

The move to Sense was made possible through funding that allowed Sparkle to deliver term-time activities in a new, more suitable location.

It means:

  • More space
  • A welcoming and inclusive environment
  • Room to offer additional places to children currently on the waiting list
  • The ability to build on the positive experiences families shared during holiday sessions

But beyond the practical details, James’ story shows something simple:

When the right environment meets the right support, children flourish. Sometimes impact looks like a funding figure or a new venue. Sometimes it looks like a big smile when you pull up outside a building. If we make a difference to one child, it matters. And at Sparkle, we’re proud that it’s not just one, it’s hundreds of children and families across Gwent, each with their own story, their own progress and their own ripple effect.

James’ story is one of many, and we’re proud to be part of it.
